Foscarnet is an antiviral drug that acts as a pyrophosphate analog, inhibiting viral DNA polymerases and reverse transcriptases. It is mainly used for the treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in patients with AIDS and for acyclovir-resistant herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections.
